Planetary Resources and 3D printing company 3D Systems have announced a partnership this week, working towards the goal of mining asteroids in space.
3D Systems, which makes printers and associated materials and services, is collaborating with the start-up Planetary to make components for the latter’s ARKYD Series spacecraft.
"We are absolutely thrilled to partner with 3D Systems, the world's pioneer and leader in 3D printing and advanced manufacturing, as we pursue our vision to expand the resource base beyond Earth. 3D Systems has a long history of inventing, advancing and democratising manufacturing,” said Planetary’s co-founder Peter Diamandis in a statement.
“Our vision of mass producing the ARKYD 100, 200 and 300 line will greatly benefit from their thinking and technology."
Planetary was established in 2009 and hopes to start mining in space in a little over a decade, according to The Motley Fool.
3DS is also a part of Made In Space, an operation that hopes to 3D print in a weightless environment.
