ASC will cut another 640 jobs by the end of next year as the Air Warfare Destroyer project is wound down, with the possibility of further cuts, the organisation has said.
The ABC and others report that shipbuilding head of the ASC, Mark Lamarre, told senate estimates that the workforce would be reduced to 1,130 by the end of next year.
“We expect by June of ’17 to have … to be down to 1,130 which would be a 617-person reduction in total numbers and by December of ’17 down to 1,095 which would another 35 or so,” Lamarre said.
The jobs to be shed included fulltime workers and contractors.
The Advertiser reports that he senate committee was told ASC had not yet been briefed by French company DCNS, which will build Australia’s 12 new submarines at a purpose-built site at Osborne.
