11 workers injured at steel factory in India

11 workers at the Tata Steel plant in Jameshdpur, India were injured on Thursday when a gas chamber exploded.

The Hindu Times reports that two of the workers were seriously hurt, while the other nine sustained minor injuries. The explosion initially caused a fire which was extinguished shortly after by Fire Tenders.

As Zeenews reports, inspector of factories, A K Mishra said that the injured were admitted to Tata Main Hospital. He added that the pipeline involved in the explosion was isolated following the incident.

“The explosion may have been caused by a short-circuit. We are still inquiring into the causes. There were no workers in the same area as the chamber but there were several working nearby,” he said.

Tata Steel in a statement said, “There has been an explosion in one of the gas holders inside the Steel Plant at around 3.30 pm today.

“All vital installations have been isolated and are safe. There is no danger of any gas leakage from the Steel Plant.”
