Nationals MP blames carbon tax for Electrolux factory review

Federal Nationals MP John Cobb has blamed the carbon tax for the current review by Electrolux of its fridge factory in Orange.

As reported by Manufacturers’ Monthly and others, Electrolux Home Products executives visited the plant last week, announcing that the site was competing with others across the globe for investment funding from the Swedish parent company.

Cobb, whose Calare electorate includes Orange, has said that the carbon tax has affected the viability of the whitegoods factory.

"Suddenly it was about to add $20 onto that differential, which if you go from $40 to $60 or $50 to $70 for a comparable article, you start to lose that advantage of being known to be a good local product," he told the ABC.

He added that a repeal of the tax if the Coalition was elected would make the future brighter for the Electrolux facility.

"We can look at the things that are making them less competitive and they are the things we as a Coalition are dedicated to dealing with: the cost of living, the cost of production and putting on false or synthetic costs, like the carbon tax on top of it
