Metal manufacturer to close down before Christmas; 30 jobs lost

It seems the bottom line falls with Australian metal manufacturing workers who are bearing the brunt of rising steel prices and a strong dollar.

Thirty metal workers will lose their jobs come December as local metal manufacturers contest with growing financial pressures.

Metal manufacturer Sankey has announced that it plans to shut down its Tomago, Newcastle  along with its Dandenong, Melbourne operations on 2 December 2011.

Parent company CMG Engineering has told Sankey’s Tomago employees that the business is no longer viable and will have to close down both operation bases. The decision will see 30 metal workers loose their jobs..

Sankey manufactures components for electric motors and transformers and has been running its Tomago operations for 60 years.

CMG said the 30 workers will be able to meet redundancy entitlements and will all be offer support services.
