Mars products recalled in 55 countries

Mars has recalled products in 55 countries after a red piece of plastic was found in a Snickers bar last month.

The BBC and others report that a German consumer found the bit of plastic and complained on January 8. The offending Snickers was traced back to a factory in the Dutch town of Vighel, and the only items recalled are those from that location.

The countries affected by the recall are mainly in Europe, and the issue reportedly does not affect Australia.

The piece of plastic was from a cover used in Mars’s manufacturing process. Among the affected brands are Mars, Milky Way, Snickers and Celebrations.

“As far as we know there are 55 countries involved,” Eline Bijveld from Mars in the Netherlands, told AFP.

“We are currently investigating exactly what’s happened, but we cannot be sure that this red piece of plastic isn’t in any other of our products from the same production line.”
