Manufacturing blamed for jobless rise

Job losses in Victoria’s large manufacturing sector have driven up the state’s rate of unemployment.

With Victoria’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate rising from 4.4 per cent to 4.6 per cent in December, it is now higher than the national average of 4.5 per cent.

Acting Prime Minister Julia Gillard says the global economic crisis is hurting manufacturers.

“Obviously those states that are particularly manufacturing states, you would expect to see some impact in the figures as a result of the manufacturing state,” she said.
