Locally made car wins best cars award

IN a breakthrough win for local manufacturing, the Ford Falcon XT has been named Australia’s top family of the year.

The six-cylinder petrol sedan edged out Toyota’s Aurion and the Honda Accord V6 to be named the most popular large car in the Australian Automobile Association’s Best Cars award.

The XT was also the first Australian-made vehicle to gain a five-star safety rating. RACQ’s Steve Spalding attributed the Falcon’s success to its superior handling, functionality and appealing looks.

“The car offers combined European-style ride and handling with the space, touring ability and towing capacity that Australians like,” Spalding said.

“The Ford Falcon award is a great result for local manufacturing.”

The Best Cars awards assess more than 280 vehicles throughout the year, the finalists of which are extensively road tested during an intensive week of assessment by an expert panel of motoring club judges.
