Leak at Shell Geelong refinery

Shell is investigating the cause of a fuel leak at its Corio refinery yesterday morning at about 5 am.

The leak began in the catalytic cracking unit and led to the evacuation of about 35 workers. The ABC reports that the workers returned to the site after lunchtime.

“Shell personnel through their normal processes were able to idle down the catalytic cracker plant, reduce the temperature and the pressure sufficiently so they could bypass and isolate the leak,” CFA operations leader Mick McGuinnesss said, according to the ABC.

Shell said that supply was not disrupted.

“The refinery is still operating and we’re not expecting any market impacts,” a spokesperson for the company said yesterday, the Herald Sun reports.
