Federal Labor has proposed that a new fleet of foreign built government vehicles would use at least a few Australian components, according to the Adelaide Now.
The proposal would mean that foreign car manufacturers who agreed to use local parts would be preferred for providing vehicles for the ComCar program.
The proposal comes as 11,000 jobs will be lost in South Australia when Holden closes its Elizabeth plant this October.
Labor spokesperson for manufacturing, Nick Champion said that making foreign car manufacturers use local parts in the provision of Comcars would help local automotive component manufacturers.
“Comcar is a small but symbolically-important part of government procurement. This could make a real difference for Australian components businesses,’’ Champion said.
The Comcar fleet had cost taxpayers A$37.5 million to run in 2015/16.
