Industry group calls for improvements to Australia’s anti dumping system

THE Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) has called for the Government to thoroughly review Australia’s anti dumping system, saying significant changes need to be made to make it a more effective process.

“The Government’s decision to have a Productivity Commission review of anti dumping comes at a time when there is extreme pressure on Australian companies competing in the domestic market,” Australian Industry Group Chief Executive Heather Ridout said on Thursday.

“Ai Group supports vigorous and fair competition, however we believe that a considerable volume of products is being dumped unfairly on to the Australian market compounding the pressures already on industry.”

She said the Ai Group’s specialist Trade Remedies Task Force, which represents a number of organisations and individual companies, has made numerous representations to government over a number of years with their concerns about the anti dumping system, particularly in relation to administrative processes.

“We have stressed in our representations that it is critical that Australia has an effective anti dumping system to ensure Australian industry does not suffer from unfair dumping from overseas.

“It is essential that the Terms of Reference that the Government sends to the Productivity Commission emphasises a firm policy position supporting this principle, consistent with WTO rules.

“Ai Group working with the Trade Remedies Task Force will be making a substantial submission to the inquiry.
