Ikea recalls 29 million dressers following child deaths

Ikea has recalled 29 million of its Malm chests and drawers in Canada and the US, after six children were killed by unstable furniture.

AP reports that one of the deaths was 27 years ago and the others were between 2002 and this year. According to the US’s Consumer Product Safety Commission, there have been 36 other reports of injuries.

“Today, IKEA US and IKEA Canada will launch a local recall of chests of drawers in North America only,” Kajsa Johansson, an Ikea spokeswoman, said.

The company says the drawers are safe if anchored to the wall, and launched a campaign  last year in the US encouraging this.

The recall only applies to the US and Canada, and is for children’s chests and drawers over 23.5 inches and adult’s chests and drawers over 29.5 inches.
