Hundreds demonstrate against chemical plant in China

Hundreds of
protesters in Guangdong province, China, demonstrated against a paraxylene
plant on Sunday.

AFP reports
that Maoming City government condemned the demonstration, in which “no one”
among the “troublemakers” died when order was restored.

posted on Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo purportedly show a bloodied,
motionless man, though this and other claims of brutality have not been independently
verified, according to the report.

material made at the plant, paraxylene, is a flammable, carcinogenic material
used in some polyester products. The plant is owned by the state-owned Sinopec Corp.

According to The Guardian, pictures indicating brutality towards protesters have been
removed by censors, and though the city claims that nobody was killed when the
protest was put down, it did not say whether or not there were injuries.
