High-tech CNC machining in demand thanks to strong aerospace and mining markets

Markets such as aerospace and mining are still performing strongly, according to machine tooling manufacturers, DMG/ Mori Seiki. This was reflected by the high-tech CNC machining centres on show at Austech 2012.

According to Paul McDermott, national product/agent manager at DMG/ Mori Seiki Australia, some of the company’s drawcards at Austech were the DMU 40 eVo Linear CNC universal milling machine and the DMU 85 monoBLOCK for 5-axis simultaneous machining.

The Mori Seiki NLX2500 universal turning machine also attracted attention at this year’s exhibition. The turning machine is suitable for applications in the booming mining sector, where large envelope machining is required.

The turning machine features a counter spindle as well as an integrated Y-axis, the company says. The turning length here is 705mm, with a diameter of 366mm. Bar loading can be machined at a diameter of 80mm – for traverse paths in X- and Z-axis of 260 or 795mm respectively.

The first joint development, the MILLTAP 700 compact efficient machining centre also proved to be a crowd puller. The machine is suitable for a whole range of applications: from small parts manufacture, electrical components to general engineering, McDermott explains.

The high machining speed usual in the field of tapping centres is supported by a high-speed tool changer which achieves a tool change time of 1.1 seconds and subsequently chip-to-chip times of 1.5 seconds enabling a highly efficient process.

There is also a special feature, namely the complete drive of the magazine. It takes 15 or optionally 25 tools – is integrated into the spindle head. Key features in this context are the dynamic response of up to 1.6g in the linear axes as well as fast axis movements up to 60m/min, which aims to significantly increase productivity.
