The federal government has provided funding to a high tech project which is expected to lead to 175 new jobs in Tasmania.
As the Hobart Mercury reports, the Sense-T online sensor network and mapping project is also expected to boost the Tasmanian economy by $100 million.
Newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced $10 million to enhance the project.
The Sense-T online sensor network and mapping project is intended to revolutionise Tasmania's agricultural, aquaculture, wine and manufacturing industries. The technology involved uses small sensors to identify climatic and other conditions in real-time around crops.
When combined with historical data, it is hoped that the real-time sensor data will provide a digital view of the Tasmanian economy.
"This is an exciting project for Tasmania, it is world's best practice and it will lead to the creation of some 175 jobs," Albanese said.
"It further entrenches Tasmania's reputation as a fresh food produce state and Australia as a fresh food produce nation."
The announcement was welcomed by many interested parties, including Tasmanian farmers, the State Government, and the Tasmanian Greens.
