The government has denied a
report that it is preparing to abolish the 2020 Renewable Energy Target.
The Australian reports that
federal finance minister Matthias Cormann has denied that the government has
asked the chair of a review into the RET, Dick Warburton, to examine the option
of terminating the scheme.
“The government remains committed to the renewable energy
target. That’s our policy,” Cormann told ABC Radio this morning.
“We are currently waiting for the results of a review which is
under way and obviously we’ll make decisions once that is received in an
orderly and methodical fashion.”
Warburton, who is a former
chief of lobby group Manufacturing Australia, is expected to report this week
on the review he chaired. The RET is currently 20 per cent of energy to be created through renewable sources by 2020.
According to The Australian Financial Review, Warburton has been asked to do more work on the option of ending
the scheme, with the government “moving towards” its termination.
