Government pumps $4M into manufacturing sector

THE Victorian Government has announced a $4 million assistance grant for the state’s ailing manufacturing sector.

The announcement follows the recent stream of manufacturing job cuts, the most recent of which was yesterday’s announcement by defence contractor BAE that it would slash 80 jobs at its Williamstown plant.

Brad Dunstan from the Centre for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing said the grants will help businesses with research and development and will ” hopefully give them that competitive edge” to keep them alive.

“They face the pressure of cost-down manufacturing from the growing of India and China,” Dunston said.
