Queensland’s Gold Coast is home to surprising number of defence manufacturers, part of a state defence industry that won $3.8 billion in contracts in 2015 – 2016.
The Gold Coast Bulletin reports that the industry includes companies that make protective spray coatings for personnel carriers and other vehicles, bullet-proof glass, and packaging for missiles and other sensitive items.
One of these, Rhino Linings, produces protective polyurethane and polyuria coatings, which are used on Bushmaster vehicles, in helicopter interiors and in other settings.
“We do unusual things that people probably don’t know we do,” the company’s managing director Denis Baker told The Bulletin.
“We have also completed special encapsulation of armour for some New Zealand Air Force craft.”
