US car maker General Motors has confirmed that it will lay off 1053 workers from its Brazilian affiliate.
AAP reports that the workers are currently employed at the company’s factory in Sao Jose dos Campos in Sao Paulo state.
According to the director of international affairs at General Motors Luiz Moan, production ended at the plant in August last year. The company gave employees a paid leave of absence from August 2013 until December 31 in compliance with the terms agreed upon with the union.
Many of the workers have already accepted the Voluntary Resignation Program (PDV). Those who had not yet done so were told the news in the last week of December.
Following a meeting with Brazil’s Finance Minister Guido Mantega, Moan confirmed that the decision was final and there was no chance it would be reversed.
