Ford, Uber and others form self-driving car coalition

A coalition of five companies working on self-driving cars has formed to lobby for the adoption of these vehicles.

Reuters reports that the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets includes Volvo Cars (owned by China’s Geely), Uber, Lyft, Ford and Google have joined forces to “work with lawmakers, regulators and the public to realize the safety and societal benefits of self-driving vehicles.”

The spokesperson and counsel for the group has been named as David Strickland, former head of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

According to the NHTSA, 94 per cent of the 6.1 million crashes on US road in 2014 were caused by human error.

Advocates for self-driving cars cite improved safety as one of the benefits of deploying these.

“What people are looking for is clear rules of the road of what needs to be done for (fully autonomous) vehicles to be on the road,” Strickland said on an interview.

“Nobody wants to take a shortcut on this.”
