Fire at Perth steel factory

Up to 200 cars caught fire during a blaze at a steel factory in Perth over the weekend.

AAP reports the fire created a large plume of smoke above Wattle Grove and the industrial area of south-west Welshpool.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said while the blaze was initially burning out of control it was eventually contained, with local traffic directed around the factory.

Testing by the DFES showed the smoke caused by the blaze was not toxic but was an irritant, and at the time locals were told to stay inside and close their doors and windows.
