Locals are concerned about the future after job losses at Builyan and Theodore sawmills.
Parkside Sawmill at Builyan shut on April 3, and a week after this the nearby Theodore Sawmill laid off 13 staff. According to ABC Brisbane, Builyan will officially shut in June.
"(There's) Jack diddly, nothing left,” local Frank McKee told the Gladstone Observer.
“Our major employer in the whole area has just shut up shop."
Local businessman Ron Bock, owner of engineering firm RD & VJ Bock, also voiced his concerns about the local economy following the Theodore job cuts.
"It just makes you wonder how the building industry is doing at the moment," he told the Central Telegraph.
"I've seen the Theodore sawmill go through a lot of ups and downs, but it's a worrying trend.”
