Export taxes to continue

THE US International Trade Commission has agreed to maintain anti-dumping and countervailing duties on imports of hot-rolled steel products from China and five other countries.

In the case of China, from which rising exports have been the subject of alarm among the rest of the world’s steelmakers, the ITC voted unanimously to maintain countervailing duties ranging from 12 to 91%, according to the particular product.

The move, as well as similar moves in Europe, is expected to influence China to increase its own steel-export taxes for the second time this year.

The ITC decision was cheered by the domestic steel industry, but regretted by various steel-consuming industries.
