EOS to expand amid $170m US weapons contract

Canberra space and defence contractor Electro Optic Systems (EOS) has announced plans to expand its production capabilities into a new plant, having agreed a major weapon systems project.

In June, the company signed a $170 million contract to supply around 600 weapons systems to the American aerospace manufacturer, Orbital ATK – and also has two other contracts on the cards.

The new R-400S0Mk2 weapon system (pictured) has been in low-volume production for more than a year, with more than 70 units shipped overseas.

Turning to Orbital ATK, EOS has completed all its planned units for 2017 and are ready for shipment, under export control by the US government.

“EOS has recently entered into a firm commercial agreements for a larger facility in Australia,” a company statement read.

“Fit-out and equipping toward a capacity $150 million per annum per shift is already underway and the new plant will be in operation from [the beginning of] 2018.”

The company says it will maintain its current production facilities until mid-2018 before the new plants takes over the production load.
