Engineering subcontractor fined 100K after BlueScope amputation accident

Transfield Services Engineering Group has been fined $100,000 over an accident that saw a worker lose a leg at a BlueScope Steel site in 2009.

The Illawarra Mercury reports that David Wormleaton, a dogman at the Port Kembla site, had his right leg amputated below the knee when an unsecured steel frame weighing 1.7 tonnes fell on him.

His company, TSEG, were subcontracted to carry out dismantling work on a sinter cooling system. They pleaded guilty in the NSW Industrial Relations Commission in April after a WorkCover investigation into the incident.
