Consumers to blame for manufacturing job cuts

AUSTRALIAN consumers are partly to blame for the Australian job losses at Pacific Brands according to the company’s CEO Sue Morphet.

The clothing manufacturer of brands including Bonds, Berlei and King Gee has come under fire for shedding nearly 1900 jobs and shifting some local manufacturing to China.

Ms Morphet blames clothing buyers in part for her decision to cut jobs.

“Long, long gone are the days when Australians are actually prepared to pay more for Australian-made goods,” Ms Morphet said.

“The only time that we’ll pay for Australian goods is if they are giving us something that buying elsewhere or cheaper isn’t giving us.”
