Australian-Chinese partnership to commercialise lithium battery technology

An Australian company, VSPC, has partnered with a Chinese firm to commercialise a Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) cathode product.

The MoU between VSPC and Beijing Saideli Technology Incorporated Company (SDL) covers the low capital establishment of a supply chain for the cathode material in China, in addition to collaboration for a study into the feasibility for international cathode material, based on VSPC technology.

The agreement ensures that VSPC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lithium Australia, will be able to take advantage of a turn to lithium energy storage technologies in the replacement of 12V and 48V lead acid batteries. This technology has applications in micro and mild hybrid powertrains, low speed electric vehicles, datacentre UPS and 5G tower backup.

Currently VSPC has patented processes for the production of lithium-ion batteries, with a focus on LFP in energy storage and transport.

According to Lithium Australia, the benefits of the VSPC technology include fast charging rates, high power delivery, long operating life, low cost, and safety at a wide range of temperatures.

According to Lithium Australia managing director, Adrian Griffin, the MoU will enable the technology to be brought to market.

“We see partnering with SDL – which has a demonstrated track record in process development and high-tech process plant delivery – as a great opportunity. VSPC’s MoU with SDL provides Lithium Australia with a low-capital pathway to the commercialisation of VSPC cathode powders, in order to meet targets set by our other partners in China,” said Griffin.

“We look forward to working with SDL, with a specific focus on the anticipated growth of LFP cathode materials for transport and energy-storage applications.”

Currently, VSPC has established a R&D and pilot plant facility in Brisbane. Here the company has tested processes for the manufacture of lithium ion battery cathode powders.
