A Nielsen poll published in the Fairfax papers today shows that 57 per cent of 1,400 respondents wanted the carbon tax gone, though only 12 per cent supported the federal government’s direct action plan.
The majority of those polled wanted the carbon tax to be repealed by the government, which prime minister Tony Abbott plans to do before Christmas. Only 16 per cent of respondents were in favour of keeping the tax.
However, just over a tenth of those polled were in favour of Abbott’s direct action policy, which would pay big emitters to lessen their CO2 output and see more trees planted.
29 per cent nominated an emissions trading scheme as their favoured way of mitigating climate change.
