Calls by both the public and private sectors for energy efficiency across the board has everyone scrutinising their plant’s energy consumption and output.
According to energy.gov.au, the largest segment of motor electricity consumption in Australia is mid-size motors with output power between 0.75kW to 375kW. Explains Martin Broglia, managing director for Bonfiglioli Australia and New Zealand: “Since 2002, motors between these ranges have been subject to energy performance standards.”

“In a bid to accommodate (and even exceed) the standards set out by government, motor manufacturers are working around the clock to improve the performance of their motors and this is certainly the case for Bonfiglioli.”

Interestingly, 01 July 2021 will see significant changes imposed by Europe for a new Ecodesign Directive (EU) 2019/1781. “This looks to introduce energy efficiency binding requirements for induction motors, and for the first time, for electronic motors controls such as frequency inverters – eliminating some of the exceptions that have been valid thus far,” explains Martin.
This directive could benefit other markets in future and will see greater energy savings come into play – particularly in its IE3 range.
Bonfiglioli’s IE3 Motor Series
The asynchronous IE3 three phase motor from Bonfiglioli – the BX series covers a wide range of general-purpose industrial applications. “Both the IEC and Compact motor are available in IE3 efficiency classes according to the international standard IEC 60034-30,” explains Martin.
Furthermore, Bonfiglioli’s e-motors can be equipped with several options: protection class up to IP56, tropicalized, corrosion-resistant paint, and anti-condensation heaters.
“Moreover, the BN/M and BX/MX motor Series are also able available in the Brake Motor version with a selection of AC or DC brakes. To maximise our e-motor flexibility, all of them can be controlled with inverters.”
Speaking to the innovation behind the range, Martin says that company continues to improve its electric motor efficacy. “The BX series withstands environments of up to IP65 as and resist extreme temperatures (with bimetallic or PTC components). Incremental and absolute encoders are also options when selecting this motor,”
“These features make the BX motors suitable for myriad applications that require low energy consumption – particularly those that run continuously,” he adds.
