The Bonds Berlei factory in Wentworthville, north-west Sydney, is due to close after the final 18 workers were laid off last week.
Textile giant, Pacific Brands, the parent company of Bonds, announced it would be moving its operations to Melbourne, with 18 jobs going from Wentworthville and 85 from Minto, the Parramatta Advertiser reported on Friday.
In 2009, over 220 textile cutters and dyers at the Wentworthville factory lost their jobs when Pacific Brands sent its manufacturing operations to China, as reported in the Sydney Morning Herald (26 February and 6 March, 2009).
The company said it made the initial decision to manufacture clothing offshore because there was "no long-term sustainable advantage from local manufacturing”, according to an earlier report in the Parramatta Advertiser.
The closure of the Wentworthville factory would mean Pacific Brands could consolidate its operations on the Melbourne site which is close to rail, air and sea, the recent report said.
