Project: Regional Driver Working Group
BOC, a member of the Linde Group, supplies compressed and bulk gases, chemicals and equipment throughout Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. With more than 50,000 employees working in 100 countries the company develops safe, sustainable and innovative solutions for customers in many specialty sectors, heavy industry and medical environments.
To address the challenges of ensuring safety on Australian roads, BOC established the Regional Driver Working Group (RDWG) independent of the OHS committee. The Group responded to BOC’s plan to develop safe driving habits and reduce vehicle incident rates for all BOC staff, family and friends.
The internal safety culture that BOC actively promotes to all employees — 100% safety, 100% of the time — is continually reinforced by the Regional Driver Working Group (RDWG). Not only does the (RDWG) seek to improve driver safety of BOC employees, but their initiatives are extended to families & friends of employees.
BOC North Ryde (Head Office) has reached 79% involvement rate in safe driving culture, with almost 90% management participation rate in June 2008.
The RDWG is achieving the goal to have all road incidents reported, no matter how significant they seem. 56 unavoidable incidents were reported in 2006, 62 unavoidable incidents were reported in 2007, and last year (2008) 80 unavoidable incidents were reported. This gives BOC the opportunity to be more involved creating strategies to prevent driving accidents.
Most importantly, since the RDWG has vigorously promoted the reporting of all driving incidents in 2006, the amount of avoidable incidents have been reduced by 10%.
The RDWG is an important initiative for BOC staff and is functioning to develop safe driving habits and reduce vehicle incident rates for all BOC staff, family and friends.
The program is so unique that larger corporations, such as Caltex & North East Freight, approached the founding team member’s of RDWG for assistance in establishing a group similar to Boc’s own group.
