BlueScope’s CEO Paul O’Malley has said “pretty serious reform” was needed in Australia in areas including workplace relations and energy policy.
O’Malley, who leads one of Australia’s biggest manufacturers, has told the Australian Financial Review, “We need a mature conversation about getting the right mix of LNG exports and domestic gas use.”
“I suspect there will be an engagement process with the government on that.”
O’Malley – whose business has been hurt by exchange rates (it has been estimated that every 1 cent reduction in the Australian dollar equates to $4 million a year to the company), input costs and dumping – did not suggest a gas reservation policy was necessary in the interview.
In an earlier interview with The Australian in August, the BlueScope boss said that such a measure to ensure the availability of affordable natural gas was not something he advocated, but it should be at least debated. He described
O’Malley also said amendments to the Fair Work regime were necessary.
