BGC owner expresses condolences over fatal accident

Len Buckeridge, founder and owner of building and mining company BGC, has called the death of a worker an “unmitigated disaster”.

The worker was involved in an accident at approximately 12:15pm on Saturday at BGC Precast Concrete in Naval Base, according to AAP reports.

A pile of sand collapsed onto the man, burying him alive. Buckeridge described the accident, the first fatality at BCG in the 50-plus years since he founded the company, as an “unmitigated disaster” in an interview with the ABC.

WorkSafe WA is investigating the incident. Meredith Hammat of Unions WA said that the rates of work accidents – now up after being in decline for years – are troubling.

“Any fatality is a tragedy and for co-workers and family… I extend to them my sympathy,” she told Perth Now.

BGC is a family-owned, Western Australia-based company.
