BAE Systems celebrates 60 years in Australia

Defence supplier BAE Systems celebrated its 60th anniversary of operation in Australia at a ceremony in Canberra last week.

BAE Systems Australia chief executive David Allott marked the occasion by saying that the company was "here for the long haul".

"Our business strategy is based very much on the long-term; we are committed to creating more cost-effective solutions for our customers in what is an increasingly challenging environment," Allott said in a statement.

“We’re entering a new era, developing and supporting next generation systems in a digital age. We’re excited about the future and we’ll be here for many years to come.”

Workers from BAE Systems’ shipyards around the country were involved in industrial action last month, as they expressed concerns that many of their jobs were at risk.

As reported in The Age, the likelihood of job losses can be attributed to the fact that governments have not committed to new shipbuilding contracts.

The company’s history in this country started in 1953, when BAE Systems tested the first generation of air defence missile systems at the Woomera Test Range, 500 kilometres north-west of Adelaide in South Australia.
