Auto-darkening welding shield

3M AUSTRALIA has launched the 3M Speedglas SL (Super Light) as the latest addition to its line of Speedglas auto-darkening welding shields.

The shield weighs 360g, which is said to make it the lightest auto-darkening welding shield available.

According to the company, the shield can be used with most arc welding processes – such as Stick, MIG/MAG, TIG and plasma welding and is particularly appropriate for low-to-moderate amperage welding (0.1A to 250A).

The auto darkening lens (ADL) uses a new liquid crystal cell technology which means that whilst it is lighter, it still has the same optical and switching performance as other Speedglas ADLs.

It has four selectable sensitivity settings and features a light state shade of 3 and five dark shades – 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. The SL ADL also has a new motion detector which automatically turns the ADL on and off as the welder picks up or sets down the shield.

The shields have been tested and approved to AS/NZS 1337 & AS/NZS 1338.1 and are said to bes non-absorbent.

Designed for the Australian welder, retaining its strength in high humidity, the shield incorporates a new patented head harness suspension system.

Welders can make personal adjustments to the shield by moving it up, down, closer or further away from the face for a more comfortable viewing position. This feature also allows for the use of respirators such as 3M disposable and half-face reusable respirators.
