Austube Mills, formerly OneSteel Australian Tube Mills, will donate a time capsule to the City of Newcastle on Thursday 4 September 2014 as part of its national 80th anniversary celebrations.
The business, which has contributed to the area’s steelworks industry since 1934, will present the time capsule to Deputy Lord Mayor Cr Brad Luke at its Business Birthday BBQ.
Austube Mills General Manager Mr Richard Clement said the time capsule, to be buried on-site at Mayfield, includes iconic memories of the business’ heritage and also stories and videos current employees have created about the business.
“The time capsule will freeze in time the journey Austube Mills has taken from being Australia’s first pipe and tube manufacturer 80 years ago to now its largest,” Mr Clement said.
He noted that since its inception as Stewarts & Lloyds in Newcastle, Austube Mills has gone on to build a strong national footprint, with two other manufacturing facilities in Victoria and Queensland.
Items included in the time capsule include anniversary books and old images, including photos of the old mills in operation and photos from when the site made shells for the Second World War effort.
“To represent the present day, we will include winning entries from internal competitions we held to engage employees and their families to tell us stories from their time at Austube Mills and short videos themed ‘Why choose Austube Mills?’,” Mr Clement said.
