Australian company EV Fire Protection has achieved international validation for its world-first fixed fire suppression system for electric vehicles, marking a major step forward in EV safety.
The EV FirePro system, designed and manufactured in Australia specifically for EV parking bays, has been independently tested and verified by Spain’s Applus+ Laboratories. With no purpose-built EV fire testing facilities in Australia, the tests confirmed the system’s safety, compliance and effectiveness under international standards.
“With global EV sales projected to exceed 200 million by 2030, the risks associated with EV fires in confined environments are only increasing,” said Gareth Morgan, director of EV Fire Protection. “Unlike traditional fires, EV battery fires are complex, intense, and can reignite hours later. Our system was engineered from the ground up to contain these fires at the source and prevent escalation.”
EV FirePro tackles the unique hazards of lithium-ion battery fires – including thermal runaway, extreme heat, and toxic gas release – through a ground-mounted system that activates beneath the vehicle. The targeted vertical and lateral water spray suppresses flames and heat spread, preventing ignition of surrounding materials.
During testing, no fire spread to adjacent vehicles, while ceiling temperatures remained under 250°C and surface temperatures below 60°C. The only spike occurred during a brief gas deflagration immediately before system activation.
“This solution was conceived, developed, and built entirely in Australia, and it’s ready to meet global demand for safer EV infrastructure,” Mr Morgan said.
Fire safety experts have praised the innovation. Jussef Liban, a Master of Science in Fire Protection Engineering, described it as “the most sensible solution” to date, while UK-based former fire service commander Martin Lown BEM called it “an upside-down sprinkler from down under”.
Mr Lown said: “The tested effectiveness of EV FirePro means a vehicle fire can be more contained in the early stages, giving fire crews both time and safer conditions to act.”
The company is now progressing installations and distribution deals across Australia, the UK, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. It will also support new partners with training and demonstration events, including at a Jaguar Land Rover test facility in the UK before the end of 2025.
EV Fire Protection recently joined a Queensland–India trade mission led by the premier, attending a signing ceremony in Delhi to support its entry into the Indian market. The company has also been nominated for the Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Business Award, with winners to be announced on 6 November 2025.
