BEING both capable and flexible are key elements in attracting defence contracts, says the Amanda Wood, MD of A-Class Metal Finishers.
Wood has helped steer the company towards ‘defence ready’ status as it gears up to meet the requirements of the fast growing Australian Defence industry.
“Relationship building is a crucial element in the attraction of any business, including defence sector work,” said Wood.
“Especially for Defence buyers, being able to demonstrate capability, skills and aptitude for providing work to the high standards required is paramount.
“Suppliers must adhere to stricter standards and specifications and their organisations and systems must be well controlled,” she explained.
The company has continuously expanded over eighteen years, introducing new metal finishing processes and developing a skilled workforce in order to compete on a national level.
Company director, Phil Wood, said the Defence industry requires surface finishes, coatings and treatments for the majority of its equipment.
“We have played a small role in supporting this sector over a number of years but now we intend to establish ourselves further as a key supplier to this huge Australian industry,” he explained.
“Although none of our process lines are individually huge or automated, we are one of the most diverse suppliers of metal coatings and finishes in the country and this stands us in good stead for servicing emerging and changing markets because requirements are often more about quality than quantity.
“Our diversity and our focus on high quality have given us deeper process knowledge and capability to compete in this market and the hands on experience of our staff, across several processes, makes us very adaptable to change,” Wood said.
“Equipment can be put together by anyone, but setting up each new process with a system that delivers the high quality and service standards required takes good knowledge, experience and skills.”
The company is officially ‘defence ready’ in line with the S.A. Government’s Commercial Defence Ready guidelines.
They were also recently confirmed as S.A. finalists in this year’s forthcoming Telstra Business Awards.
