Austal makes joint bid with Fassmer to build to offshore patrol vessels

Australian shipbuilder Austal has joined German shipbuilder Fassmer’s bid for the federal government’s offshore patrol vessel program, according to The Western Australian.

If the joint bid is successful, the manufacturing would involve two ships being built in South Australia and ten ships in Western Australia.

The Henderson-based company has secured a deal which would see Austal build all 12 ships if Fassmer was successful.

Australian Strategic Policy Institute senior analyst Andrew Davies said Austal is a “very credible” industry partner.

“We’re talking about a company here that’s exported lots of vessels from Australia and is building 15 per cent of the US Navy’s future fleet.”

Fassmer, Damen and another German shipbuilder, Lurssen, are the short-listed companies to design and deliver the Navy vessels. Final bids are being lodged and the final outcome will be decided after then.
