Apple supplier Pegatron accused of violating worker rights

Pegatron Corp, a Taiwanese company that makes Apple products has been accused by New York-based rights group China Labor Watch of mistreating workers at its Chinese factories in Shanghai and Suzhou.

Reuters reports that Apple iPads and iPhones are assembled at the Chinese factories and that workers at these plants are being forced to work unpaid overtime in poor conditions.

China Labor Watch completed a report into conditions in the factories after it sent undercover investigators into three Pegatron factories and interviewed almost 200 interviews workers outside the factories from March to July.

According to the report, "the Pegatron factories are violating a great number of international and Chinese laws and standards as well as the standards of Apple's own social responsibility code of conduct."

In fact, according to the report, there were at least 86 labor rights violations, including 36 legal violations and 50 ethical violations.

The violations fall into 15 categories: dispatch labor abuse, hiring discrimination, women’s rights violations, underage labor, contract violations, insufficient worker training, excessive working hours, insufficient wages, poor working conditions, poor living conditions, difficulty in taking leave, labor health and safety concerns, ineffective grievance channels, abuse by management, and environmental pollution.

Responding to the report, Pegatron said in a statement that it would investigate the claims and would take action to ensure that all Chinese labour laws as well as its own code of conduct is followed.

Apple responded by saying that the "….latest report contains claims that are new to us and we will investigate them immediately. 

 "If our audits find that workers have been underpaid or denied compensation for any time they've worked, we will require that Pegatron reimburse them in full."

Pegatron's factories in China employ more than 70,000 workers.
