Ai Group elects new national president

Lucio Di Bartolomeo, a non-executive director of Downer EDI, has been elected as the Australian Industry Group’s (Ai Group) new national president.

Di Bartolomeo was elected to the key role representing Australian industry at Ai Group’s 138th Annual General Meeting held in Canberra.

In addition to his Downer EDI position, Di Bartolomeo is chairman of Macquarie Generation, chairman of Parklands Foundation and non-executive director of Reliance Rail, the Australian Rail Track Corporation and the AustralianSuper Trustee Board.

He is a former managing director of ADI Limited and FreightCorp. He has previously served as Ai Group deputy national president and NSW branch president.

In accepting the Ai Group presidency, Di Bartolomeo said: “Australia has entered a period where we have a very different political environment, a global economy where there remains great uncertainty and major challenges on the national agenda with which Ai Group will, as always, be fully engaged. These challenges include workplace relations, tax reform, climate change, trade, population and innovation.

“In the new political environment where the capacity for reform remains untested, Ai Group has a critical role to play. In this regard, Ai Group will retain at the forefront of our advocacy the need for policies which ensure we retain a balanced and diversified economy beyond the mining boom,” Di Bartolomeo said.

Di Bartolomeo succeeds Don Matthews who has been Ai Group National President since November 2008.

Ai Group chief executive Heather Ridout congratulated Di Bartolomeo on his election and thanked Matthews for his great contribution and support for the organisation and industry generally.

“Mr Matthew’s Presidency spanned the GFC and the issues this gave rise to, as well, major issues around workplace relations reform and climate change. He brought balance and strong leadership to these issues which were very difficult for industry,” Ridout said.
