WA engineering company Civmec Construction has been awarded
a major contract on the $1 billion Perth Stadium project at Burswood.
Perth Now reports that Henderson-based Civmec will install
over 14,000 tonnes of structural steel, to be used in the superstructure and
canopy of the facility.
The contract is worth $73 million and is one of the biggest awarded for the project,
which is scheduled for completion in 2018.
Civmec had worked on some of the state’s major projects in
the mining construction boom, such as Gorgon. Contracts such as this were vital
for local companies after the boom, said the Australian Steel Institute’s James
England.
“The importance can’t be underestimated at this
time,” he told the ABC.
“Obviously, we’re going through a transition in regard
to the reduction in the resources work that’s around, but this work is just at
the right time and just at the right scale.”
Some of the steel would be imported, but the “vast majority” would be locally made, according to Civmec.
State commerce minister Michael Mischin said the contact
would create 120 jobs and was an
example of his government’s support for local businesses.
“Civmec, as a WA company, will have the opportunity to play
such an important role in the delivery of this world-class venue, showcasing
the skills and capabilities of the local steel fabrication industry,” he said in a statement.
The stadium’s completion is timed to be before the 2018 AFL
season.
The 60,000-seat venue is being built by the WESTADIUM consortium, led by Brookfield Multiplex and John Laing.
