Toyota is recalling 6.5 million vehicles over a problem with power windows, applying to certain vehicles made between 2005 and 2010.
AFP reports that there had been no deaths due to the defect, which involves a power window issue that could pose a fire risk. One customer is may have burnt a hand.
The problem involves a possible lack of grease in the operating mechanisms of power window switches, with News Corp describing the issue as “one of the weirdest automotive recalls of all time”.
“If insufficient grease was applied, under certain conditions the switch may develop a short circuit that can cause the switch assembly to overheat and melt. In the worst case, a melting switch can produce smoke and potentially lead to a fire,” an email from Toyota reads.
Sky News reports Toyota as saying “less than 300,000” cars in Australia were affected by the voluntary recall, though an exact number is unknown.
The recall involves Yaris, Corolla, Camry, Kluger and RAV4 models made between 2005 and 2010, and follows almost 10 million vehicles recalled by the Japanese auto maker over faulty airbags. These had been linked to eight fatalities.
