The Supply Chain & Logistics Association of Australia (SCLAA) and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Australia (CILTA) partnered to present the Australian Supply Chain and Logistics Excellence Awards 2008 on Thursday the 13th of November at the Sofitel Brisbane.
The gala event was supported by Air Road, Chep, Crown Lift Trucks, Dematic, DGL, Mack Trucks, Queensland Transport, SupplyChain Review and Victoria University.
2008 ASCL STORAGE & HANDLING OF MATERIALS AWARD For significant achievements in the techniques and technology of materials storage and handling at any stage of the Supply Chain. Technology covers equipment and design techniques, including facilities design, and associated information and control systems. Improvements and/or innovation with particular regard to impact on organisational objective, and to contribution to the wider field of materials storage and handling must be demonstrated. The trophy was first awarded in 1980 and is dedicated to Dexion’s Founder, Demetrius Comino, OBE.
HIGH COMMENDATION: Global Cold Chain Solutions
WINNER: AUSTRALIAN AIR EXPRESS As an integral part of their National Business Strategy entitled,” Building Our Future”, AaE embarked on a comprehensive program of facilities design and construction with attendant radical process redesign. This embraced world leading auto sortation technologies together with innovative integrated information systems and properly aligned human interfaces. Resultant significant benefits in throughput, accuracy, customer service, cost reduction and employee satisfaction evidences the outstanding success of the initiative.
Finalists for 2008 were BMW Group Australia, Contrak Container Company, Global Cold Chain Solutions, Smiths Pepsico, Murray Goulburn and Australian Air Express.
2008 ASCL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT AWARD For significant achievement in the use of communications, information management, technology and e-business in any aspect of Supply Chain and Logistics management, with particular regard to the added value produced by the achievement. The trophy was first awarded in 1994 and is dedicated to the late Len Smith FAIMM.
HIGH COMMENDATION: Inside Info
WINNER: DIRECT COURIERS All projects were worthy candidates in the information management category with each candidate having a positive effect for the customer. The winner for 2008 is Direct Couriers and their use of technology (GPS, Google Maps) to analyse the efficiency of their fleet which enables them to have functionality which drives business efficiency and customer service. Inside Info has been awarded a High Commendation for the methods it used to deploying a proprietary software package that has simplified the analysis of its Supply Chain to provide real metric for business improvement.
Finalists for 2008 were Black & White Cabs, Inside Info, Polar Fresh and Australian Air Express.
2008 ASCL TRAINING, EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT AWARD For significant achievement in any aspect of training, education, or the development of people which is relevant to Supply Chain and Logistics. This can cover formal education through a tertiary institution, in-company training, training provided by a registered training organisation or private training. Professional development can be demonstrated at any level. The trophy was first awarded in 2002 and is dedicated to the late Professor Peter Gilmour.
HIGH COMMENDATION: Kagan Logistics
WINNER: VICTORIA UNIVERSITY The emerging plethora of work skills and training development programs on offer throughout Australia continues to impress as new facilities, alliances and milestone initiatives enter the training market. The 2008 Training, Education and Development Awards nominations had a number of challenging presentations to judge. The winning nomination came from the Victoria University which demonstrated the ability to provide a comprehensive range of transport and warehousing skills development courses, within its School of Industry’s suite of Skills Training programs. These programs are built around highly competent trainers providing practical, hands-on skills development to compliment class-room studies via its well equipped Werribee campus training site. To underpin its nomination, Victoria University wisely chose to reference the example of the Sadler’s Transport challenge which wanted to secure its employees competencies through professional assessment and training outcomes.
Finalists for 2008 were Costa Logistics, Damco Australia, Kagan Logistics, Major Operator & Driver Training Service, RMIT University, VicRoads and Queensland TAFE.
2008 ASCL MANUFACTURING LOGISTICS AWARD For significant achievement in any aspect of Logistics associated with manufacturing, with particular regard to the effect on cost and efficiency of the total manufacturing process and the integrated Supply Chain. This may include the design or process re-engineering of Logistics flows in manufacturing facilities, integrating Supply Chains, plant layout, forecasting and scheduling production. The trophy was first awarded in 1963 and is dedicated to the late Mr.W. (Bill) Cribben.
WINNER: MURRAY GOULBURN “Project Tango”, Pallet Runner System was installed for Murray Goulburn Co-Operative Storage and Distribution Centre in Laverton, Victoria. Whilst this system was nominated for several other categories, it proved to be well ahead of its opposition in regards to a materials handling/logistics system MANUFACTURED for a specific task. Materials handling systems that can feature in modern warehousing where automation of receivals, cross-docking, inventory management and dispatch to order are tasks that need to be efficiently managed. By their nature, these systems are often sophisticated and complex, are task orientated networks bringing together design, structural and mechanical constructions and computer control innovations. Dematic’s Pallet Runner System, installed at the Murray Goulburn Laverton facility fits the Manufacturing Logistics criteria and represents a fine example of the building of a structural system that supports the dense storage demands required by the client and also provides the wherewithal to respond to ‘smart’ computer inventory controls.
Finalists for 2008 were Mrs Crockett’s Kitchen, Murray Goulburn and Smiths Pepsico.
2008 ASCL ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARD For significant achievement in any area of environmental concern, including traffic congestion, packaging or waste disposal, recycling and energy consumption. Achievement in the specific application and its wider applicability must be demonstrated thereby promoting environmental best practice. The trophy was first awarded in 1966 and is dedicated to Mr Ken Pike.
HIGH COMMENDATION: Air Road Swire Cold Storage
WINNER: OXFORD COLD STORAGE This year the standard of submissions was extremely high standard. The range of initiatives being considered by the industry were from recycling, to vehicle technology to management practices aimed at reducing consumption) for which all nominees should be congratulated. The winner is Oxford Cold Storage with their submission on Rain Water Harvesting for use in their Condensors reducing the need on mains supply which has already saved in excess of 9 million litres of water in only 4 months of operation. Air Road received a High Commendation for their efforts in Trailer Design — increasing Freight volume/ less fuel, as a real and practical project and outcome with significant flow on environmental benefits.
Finalists for 2008 were Air Road, Glaxo Smith Kline, Global Cold Chain Solutions, Oki Tedi Mining, Swire Cold Storage, TNT Australia, Travel Smart and Queensland Transport.
2008 ASCL SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT AWARD
HIGH COMMENDATION: Unipart Logistics Australia
WINNER: CONTRAK CONTAINER COMPANY Contrak Container Company established a new business model embracing best practice collaboration between supply chain entities to design, source dies and materials, manufacture, store, market and deliver(in company with CEVA) a range of innovative Australian sized folding bins. It entailed starting from scratch to plan and implement the products and the Supply Chain. The initiative delivered increased product options and customer choice, cost reductions, ready availability, and positive environmental impacts. Contrak Container Company clearly demonstrates that Supply Chain Management can deliver real value.
Finalists for 2008 were Murray Goulburn, Smiths Pepsico, Post Logistics and Unipart Logistics Australia.
2008 ASCL T&L ACHIEVEMENT OF THE YEAR AWARD The purpose of this award is to acknowledge an outstanding innovative contribution to a development in the Transport and Logistics industries by an organisation or an individual. The nomination will clearly describe the nature or the achievement or proposal, the circumstances in which it was put into effect, the extent of the individual involvement, the scale of the application, the results achieved and the significance of the achievement. The trophy was first awarded in 1966 and is dedicated to Mr S. Pike Senior.
HIGH COMMENDATION: Australian Air Express
WINNER: POST LOGISTICS This year, the award goes to Post Logistics, a company which initiated a ground-breaking achievement by enabling Australian-based customers to supply global markets with products sourced out of China. This is truly an example of developing an effective Supply Chain – not just across Australia, but across the World.
Finalists for 2008 were Australian Air Express, Newcastle and Hunter Region Transport Awareness Group, Post Logistics, Queensland Transport, Sydac and Melinda Buker.
2008 ASCL T&L ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR AWARD The aim of this award is to encourage and acknowledge the outstanding achievement of an individual who is actively working in an organisation within the Transport and Logistics industries. The award is not limited to a particular discipline in T&L, but may relate to areas including, but not limited to, engineering, planning, policy, logistics, finance, administration or management. The trophy was first awarded in 1987 and is dedicated to Mr Mike Munns, FAIMM.
WINNER: PETER MARTINOVICH The 2008 T&L Achiever of the Year award has been awarded to Peter Martinovich of the Western Australian Public Transport Authority. Peter is a person who has been a key figure in formulating the current shape of public transport in Perth WA. This is a man who takes the holistic view — not just one of public transport — but about how the city works, how it flows, recognising that an effective transport service is a determinant of these features.
Finalists for 2008 were Adrian Ryan, Louise Perram-Fisk and Paul Marlin.
2008 ASCL YOUNG T&L PROFESSIONAL AWARD The purpose of this award is to provide recognition and achievement for individuals who are actively involved in day-to-day operations and development of Transport and Logistics organisation in Australia. The award is not limited to a particular discipline in Transport and Logistics but may relate to areas including, but not limited to, engineering, planning, policy, Logistics, finance, administration or management. Candidates must be under 35 years of age in 2008. The winner will be awarded a trip to Mauritius. This includes accommodation, airfares and attendance at the 2009 CILT International Awards.
