$2.4M QLD TAFE Grants to address skills shortage

The Queensland Government has launched a new applied research grants programme aimed at tackling the state’s skills shortage and delivering practical, job-ready training in advanced manufacturing. A total of $2.4 million in grant funding is now available through QLD TAFE Centres of Excellence, with the first round of applications closing on 31 July 2025.

The applied research grants will fund projects designed to improve training delivery and employment outcomes across two of Queensland’s most critical sectors.

The initiative aims to build strong partnerships between TAFE, industry and community organisations, with a particular focus on regional access, culturally appropriate training and increasing workforce participation in rural areas.

Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training Ros Bates said the funding was a sharp departure from the former Labor Government’s approach, which she described as ineffective.

“Under Labor, too many Queenslanders were let down by a training system that didn’t deliver,” Minister Bates said. “This is about making sure every Queenslander, no matter where they live, has access to quality training that meets the needs of local employers.

“We’re focused on outcomes – training that’s practical, accessible, and leads directly to employment, especially in aged care and manufacturing where skilled workers are in high demand.”

The funding programme is part of the QLD Government’s broader economic strategy to address labour shortages and strengthen regional economies through industry-aligned education and skills development.

The grants are expected to support innovative projects that test new approaches to technical training, with an emphasis on flexibility and employer-led curriculum design. They are open to registered training organisations in collaboration with local industries, community partners and other educational institutions.

Applications can be submitted via the TAFE Queensland website, with successful projects expected to commence later in 2025.
