A new generation of safety controllers: Modularity and scalability on all levels

The demands on modularity, scalability, openness and adaptability are steadily increasing in all areas of automation technology, including safety technology. Accordingly, customers require individualized solutions for all types of applications ranging from small custom machines to complex large-scale systems.  Addressing precisely these aspects, Beckhoff offers the EL6910 TwinSAFE Logic Terminal and its derivatives, and lays the foundation for the next generation of safety control technology.

With these new safety control devices, the TwinSAFE system can be adapted even more effectively to the specific requirements of a machine concept – from low-cost, stand-alone solutions with local inputs and outputs to centralized safety control with distributed I/O modules through to highly complex networks with distributed safety applications.

Concerned with food safety? Let CRC help.

At CRC we understand the food industry, whether growing, producing, and processing or packaging requires the most stringent conformity of compliance.

We also understand that a range of maintenance products is no longer enough, that is why we have not only developed NSF H1 and A1 products, manufactured to the same high standard that has made CRC a worldwide leader in MRO maintenance, but we have also developed our exclusive CRC GREENLIGHT Food Safety Program, developed to reduce the risk of incident when conducting maintenance during production.

CRC is a certified supplier of HACCP Australia’s endorsed food safe products.

HACCP is an internationally recognised method of identifying and managing risk and, when central to an active food safety programme, can provide vendors, the public and government sector bodies with a high degree of comfort that food safety is being taken seriously and is well managed.

The CRC GREENLIGHT Food Safety Program can either simplify or improve on your current QA auditing programs through the introduction of:

– The CRC range of NSF H1 and A1 HACCP approved maintenance products

– On-site central point for audit documentation – SDS, TDS, NSF and allergen certificates

– A visual food safety identification program through wall and cupboard signage, posters and printed materials

– Site survey and assessment

– On-going updates to ensure you remain at the highest level of regulatory compliance

– Inventory assessment and management with an aim to reduce costs

Guide to ESPE basics

Electro-sensitive Protective Equipment (ESPE) or what we tend to refer to as light barriers, light curtains and laser scanners – are an extremely common protective device in machinery safety applications.

However, they are also very low down on the guarding hierarchy listed in every machinery safety legislation or standard available. So when using ESPE it is imperative that the right devices are used and then, even more crucially to achieve the desired safety outcomes, applied correctly to the application.

The aim of this white paper is to give information that may help in the selection and correct application of light barriers in machinery guarding applications.

Crossing borders together with the outdoorScan3 from SICK

With the outdoorScan3, SICK is launching the world’s first IEC62998-certified safety laser scanner for outdoor use, thus opening up a new dimension for safety applications. The aim of this development order for the outdoorScan3 from SICK was to accelerate intralogistics processes while at the same time providing personal protection. The focus is on automated guided vehicle systems that have to switch between halls and transport goods outdoors. The outdoorScan3 enables safe navigation through external industrial environments. Sun, rain, snow and fog no longer stand in the way of going outside.

Monitoring gaps in axial piston pumps

Gaps in axial piston pump must be continuously monitored to prevent sudden loss of pressure and pump failures. To date, this gap measurement has not been possible due to the severity of the operating condition. The eddy NCDT3300 is a compact eddy current measurement system from MicroEpsilon that is capable of operating at extreme pressure and temperature and therefore, is suitable to be used for measurement in this application.

TwinSAFE SC integrates standard signals into safety technology

TwinSAFE SC technology (TwinSAFE Single Channel) permits the use of standard signals for safety tasks in any network or fieldbus. To do this the data from the EtherCAT Terminals, extended by the TwinSAFE SC function, are fed to the EL6910 TwinSAFE Logic terminal, where they undergo safety-related multi-channel processing.

Building a facility for the future: Case study

A state-of-the-art facility supports company anticipated growth and incorporating green design principles. As a private label manufacturer, Masters Gallery’s facilities are regularly inspected by potential partners and third-party auditors. As such, the company wanted a state-of-the-art facility that didn’t just fulfill its current needs (and satisfy FSMA compliance), but could sustainably support the company’s anticipated growth for decades to come. One of the ways the cheese processor/distributor accomplished this was by incorporating green design principles.

New Air Cannon: Safer and more effective solution for bulk material build-up

Air Cannons are pressure vessels with attached valve mechanisms that blast air at high-velocity speeds approaching MACH 2. They are frequently used to dislodge bulk material build-up and allow for maximum storage capacity.

ESS Engineering Services & Supplies have developed a new Air Cannon system that is highly effective and safer than those previously available. Available in both internal and external value arrangements, ESS engineers have designed a tank and valve that can be retrofitted onto any previously installed valve arrangement – an industry first. They’ve also independently tested the valves against competitors and have found the ESS Air Cannons to be the most powerful option on the Australian market.

Safe human-robot collaboration

For safety reasons, humans and robots have been going their physically separate ways for years now. Today, productivity increases as well as demographic change with an increasingly ageing working population are an impetus to tap into the potential of human-robot collaboration (HRC). If, however, humans and robots want to share a workspace, then the subject of safety is of central importance.

Conveyor performance: How to optimise belt tracking systems and prevent downtime

Conveying systems are an essential component to any operation that requires the transportation of bulk materials. Due to the harsh environments that conveyor systems are often situated in – and the type of materials they move – they are subject to a plethora of stresses that can cause components to break down. One of the most common causes of conveyor failure is mistracking on the belt. As the belt itself represents between 25-50 per cent of an entire conveyor systems’ costs, it is recommended that preventative measures are adopted to minimise belt failure. This white paper discusses the causes of belt mistracking and provides an insight into how to identify the causes, and which devices or systems can be used to prevent mistracking.
