Reliable in wind, waves, and weather: DNV GL certified cables for e-chains

Oil rigs, gas production facilities, wind farms, port facilities or ship cranes: these applications have very special requirements for safe energy and data transmission. The company igus is the only manufacturer to develop, test and certify cables in accordance with DNV GL for use in maritime e-chains. Today, Treotham customers have access to more than 370 control, servo, motor and robot cables as well as bus, data, encoder and fibre optic cables for the safe operation of maritime applications.

The oceans have long been part of the global economy by way of wind farms and worldwide cargo traffic. Offshore companies face similar challenges as their onshore counterparts. For example, in the exploration and transport of raw materials at sea, cost pressure has risen sharply in recent years, so that the automation, which is already state of the art on land today, is also becoming important in the offshore sector. Igus chainflex cables from Treotham help companies to guarantee the necessary energy and data supply, thereby offering significant cost savings. This starts with straightforward planning using the approved cables, continues with simple installation and ends with smooth and maintenance-free operation in extreme conditions.

Resistant to oil, sun and seawater

Offshore companies and their suppliers who are thinking of expanding their renewable technologies or preparing their merchant fleets for the future, now have more than 370 DNV GL certified cables available from Treotham. These are designed for the highly dynamic use in energy chains for safe operation at sea. Together with the DNV GL, igus has developed completely new test methods and standards for dynamically used cables in e-chains. In addition to the extensive testing procedures in accordance with DNV GL, the cables have also been tested under real conditions in the igus test laboratory spread over an area of 2,750 square metres. They therefore have a unique guarantee for up to 10 million strokes in energy chains, are flexible in terms of operating temperatures down to -40°C and are also UV-resistant. Besides having seawater resistance, the cables also operate reliably under the influence of oil. The cables are resistant according to MUD NEK606, which enables maintenance-free pumping on drilling rigs and also stands for operator safety. Specially designed for movement in e-chains, the cables reliably carry out their tasks there, regardless of the length of the travel or the load to be moved.

chainflex cables keep maritime installations moving reliably

With chainflex cables, plant constructors enjoy maximum freedom for the design of cables and energy chains, since there are virtually no limits to the application areas – whether under water or on the surface, whether under permanent sunshine or in prolonged cold. The use of approved chainflex cables means safe and stable operation of offshore installations for all those responsible for the proper running of a facility in shipyards, equipment suppliers, general contracting or manufacturing companies.

Onsite consultations

Treotham offers onsite consultations to customers where they are able to design, supply and service igus chainflex cables and e-chain systems. Please call for more information or to request a visit from a technical engineer.

Maxim delivers wide voltage range and small footprint with Himalaya uSLIC family additions

Now engineers designing into applications in factory automation, medical, communications and consumer markets can tap into four new micro-system-level IC (uSLIC) modules from Maxim Integrated Products.

The MAXM17552, MAXM15064, MAXM17900 and MAXM17903 step-down DC-DC power modules join Maxim’s extensive portfolio of Himalaya power solutions, providing the widest input voltage range (4 to 60V) with the smallest solution sizes.

While miniaturisation remains the trend for an array of system designs, many of these designs also require a wide range of input voltages. For example, supply voltages in factory automation equipment are susceptible to large fluctuations due to long transmission lines.

USB-C and broad 12V nominal applications require up to 24V of working voltage protection against transients due to hot plugging of supplies and/or batteries. The newest Himalaya uSLIC power modules extend the portfolio’s range up to 60V versus the previous maximum of 42V and come in a solution size (2.6mm x 3.0mm x 1.5mm) less than half the size of the closest competitive offering.

The modules feature a synchronous wide-input Himalaya buck regulator with built-in FETs, compensation and other functions with an integrated shielded inductor. Having the inductor in the module simplifies the toughest aspect of power supply design, enabling designers—even those with little power expertise—to create a robust, reliable power supply in less than a day.

The newest uSLIC modules are:

  • MAXM17552, a 4 to 60V, 100mA module with 100 to 900kHz adjustable switching frequency, 82 per cent efficiency (24V VIN at 5V/0.1A) and external synchronization frequency in a 2.6mm x 3mm x 1.5mm package
  • MAXM15064, a 4.5 to 60V, 300mA module with 500kHz adjustable switching frequency, 82 per cent  efficiency (24V VIN at 5V/0.1A), external synchronization frequency and built-in output voltage monitoring in a 2.6mm x 3mm x 1.5mm package
  • MAXM17900, a 4 to 24V, 100mA module with 100 to 900kHz adjustable switching frequency, 86 per cent efficiency (12V VIN at 5V/100mA), external synchronization frequency and built-in output voltage monitoring in a 2.6mm x 3mm x 1.5mm package
  • MAXM17903, a 4.5 to 24V, 300mA module with 500kHz fixed switching frequency, 77 per cent efficiency (12V VIN at 3.3V/300mA), external synchronization frequency and built-in output voltage monitoring in a 2.6mm x 3mm x 1.5mm package

Key Advantages

  • Wide Input Voltage Range in the Smallest Size: Industry’s broadest input voltage range (4 to 60V) in the smallest size (2.6mm x 3.0mm x 1.5mm), less than half the size of the closest competing solution.
  • Ease of Use: One of the toughest design challenges for inexperienced designers is to choose an inductor which will meet the power, size, emission and temperature requirements for a given design. Himalaya uSLIC modules have an integrated shielded inductor which conforms to the standards of the datasheet, meeting all electrical requirements and allowing designers to build a power supply in a few hours. Getting a fully working power supply can be as easy as choosing the input and output capacitor and setting the output voltage through the resistor divider network.
  • Robust and Compliant with Electromagnetic Interference Standards: Compliant to CISPR 22 (EN 5022) Class B EMI, eliminating the need for power supply redesigns; JEDEC certified to withstand drop, shock and vibration.

Intelligent low cost vibration monitoring – for ARMS, VRMS, Peak and Unbalance for monitoring simple machines

Condition monitoring is an important factor in many different industries. There is continual pressure to reduce production and maintenance costs, but at the same time uptime, increase Overall Equipment Effectiveness. The conditions unbalance and overall vibration monitoring of plant machines, such as motors, fans and pumps, which are often monitored manually or not at all, ifm efector now has a simple and interesting alternative.

The recently developed unit from ifm efector, VNB211 monitors online the overall vibration condition of machines and plants according to ISO 10816.

This new unit is full of surprises as with the addition of a simple dual cable it is possible to add a further accelerometer – so now it becomes a dual point monitoring system.

Alternatively, if the second accelerometer is not required it is also possible to connect temperature or pressure transmitters to monitor and measure machine health.

The sensor has an integrated time-stamped history function for both process values for up to 800,000 values this equates to a reading every five minutes for three years. It is even possible to reduce the sampling time down to 1 sec intervals for a fast acting machine. A simple and reliable trending is therefore possible directly from the machine.

The sensor measures RMS in Velocity in mm/s or in/s which is quite common but also Acceleration in RMS is freely available.

The measured value and switch point status are indicated in the LED display and critical conditions can be signalled using two switching outputs or one switching output and one analogue output. Alternatively, it is possible to provide the sensor with a voltage supply using an optional USB-interface. The push-button programming makes the unit simple and fast to set-up but it is even easier if configuration software is utilised. I/O and serial data via a wireless interface

The proprietary Radioline wireless system from Phoenix Contact is now able to transmit I/O signals and serial modbus/RTU data in parallel. Devices with firmware 1.80 or higher support dual mode PLC/modbus RTU, while any older devices can be updated via the PSI-CONF 2.50 software free of charge. I/O modules from the product range can then be added to a Radioline device and additional modbus/RTU slaves can be connected via the serial interface.

This dual mode now makes it possible to transfer information from a serial measuring station and additional I/O data simultaneously. This data can, for example, include door contacts or alarm signals from passive sensors. While in the past, a parallel communication path or additional modbus/RTU station was required for this purpose, the I/O function of the Radioline system can now be accessed.

Power management in mobile vehicles

In many small and compact mobile applications, the requirements on control tasks are increasing. Cost-optimised, modular mini controllers for mobile use are in demand.

ifm offers ecomatmobile Basic consisting of the components BasicRelay, BasicController and BasicDisplay that are adapted to each other.

This BasicController family is now complemented by the BasicController relay. Its special feature is made up of six protected power relay outputs with diagnostic capability for the supply of high-current consumers in mobile machines.

In addition it has multifunctional digital and analogue inputs that can be configured via the application software. The BasicControllerrelay is freely programmable via the IEC61131-3-compatible CODESYS software.

Functions and advantages

The compact, flexible and inexpensive mini controller replaces the conventional relay logic and also demanding and complex process controllers.

Mechanical design

The control electronics integrated in a compact plastic housing provides all the necessary connections for the inputs and outputs, communication and programming.

The coded connectors for mobile use are easy to handle and available all over the world. The connection of sensors and actuators is carried out without further external wiring. Due to an increase of the protection rating through a cover and a pluggable cable seal the BasicController can also be used in areas that are exposed to splashing water.

Powerful electronics

The integrated 32-bit processor and the electronics are optimally tailored to the application. Inputs and outputs can be configured to the application via the user program. The powerful plug-in relay outputs ensure the connection of high-current consumers. All relay outputs are with diagnostic capability and individually protected. Each output has a freely programmable status LED. Thanks to the additional multi-functional inputs a flexible control module for mobile machines is available.

Programmable Mini Controller

The CODESYS software enables a clear and easy creation of the application software for the user. The control module BasicController supports all common CODESYS programming languages. Simple and clearly structured function libraries are available for communication and special device functions.

Communication interfaces

The BasicController is equipped with two CAN interfaces to ISO 11898. These interfaces are used to exchange data with the connected BasicDisplay, further BasicController modules or the engine controller. Among others, the interfaces support the CANopen protocol and the J1939 protocol. The CAN interfaces are also used for programming.

ifm IO Control – Rugged Smart IO Module with Integrated Controller

Smart IO Module is a decentralised I/O module connected to the controller via CAN bus. It is installed away from the controller on remote machine parts right where the signals are generated. The high protection rating makes it suitable for outdoor installation in wet and dirty areas.

DEUTSCH connectors, which are widely used in mobile automation, ensure an easy and safe connection of sensors and actuators. Networking of the CAN bus is effected via prewired drop cables.

Smart IO Module can either be used as a configurable I/O module or as a mini controller in the field. CODESYS is used as a programming system.

ROBUST HOUSING: The glass-fibre reinforced housing makes the module impact resistant to handle the harsh conditions on the mobile vehicle. This housing also reduces the weight of the module in half compared to some metal IO Modules as this can be quiet critical in some applications if mounted on the boom.

I/O FLEXIBILTY: A high degree of flexibility is provided by the configurable inputs and outputs. There is a choice of analogue and digital inputs. The analogue inputs can be set as current inputs (0…20 mA) or voltage inputs (0…10 V / 0…32 V). Some inputs can also be configured as either resistance/digital or frequency/digital.

LED DISPLAY: An integrated two-colour LED display with keyboard serves to indicate the most important system messages, the baud rate and the node number as well as for device configuration.

DIAGNOSTICS: The smart IO Modules provide current feedback on most of the outputs which make it possible to detect wire break or short circuit on specific ports.

PROGRAMMABLE MINI CONTROLLER: Apart from their application as I/O modules, all units can also be used as freely programmable mini controllers with CANopen and J1939 among others. Programming is done via CODESYS by means of the standardised IEC 61131-3 languages, allowing the user to build the application software with ease. In addition, libraries are available for special functions of the controller.

COMMUNICATION INTERFACES: IO Module is equipped with two CAN interfaces to ISO 11898 for programming and data exchange with connected modules, controllers, displays or an engine controller.
