Solving challenges in material handling through engineering solutions

At the start of 2018, Richmond Wheel and Castor company was contacted to help design and supply wheels for a large slipway. The company met and exceeded the requirements of the project, despite the challenges.

As a family-owned business with 60 years of experience, Richmond Wheel and Castor  specialises in the design, manufacture and supply of industrial wheels, rollers, castors and material-handling equipment.

The company offered a full package for designing the spilway; including wheels, bushes, axles and housings ready to install in place, helping to minimise the time and cost required to commission the upgrade project.

Richmond met and exceeded the stringent timeline requirements, and utilised manufacturing and assembly in both Melbourne and Perth to ensure satisfactory completion in a compressed timeline.

The wheels were designed to meet a 40-tonne load capacity with a 3x factor of safety, and 186 wheels were supplied to carry a 2,000-tonne trolley.

Additional features included custom-made graphite impregnated bronze bushes to handle the extreme load in a harsh marine environment, Xylan coating for corrosion resistance, and custom-made steel double flange wheels for strength and durability.

“For decades we have specialised in working with our customers to solve simple to highly complex engineering challenges, specialising in material handling applications. No project is too big for our engineering department,” Daniel Kabel, engineering department manager at Richmond Wheels and Castor Co told Manufacturers’ Monthly.

“Our Melbourne-based factory offers extensive precision CNC machining and fabrication capabilities. With a wide variety of machines and fabrication facilities in house, combined with additional support (when required) from our local manufacturing network, we can build whatever you require.

“Whatever your project. Whether it’s simply design, design and supply, or complete project management. Richmond can offer a world class solution,” he said.

Richmond Wheel and Castor Co has multiple branches across Australia and New Zealand.
